In Newfoundland, cod liver oil was not only a product of the fishing industry but also a source of cultural identity and economic activity. Gerald S. Doyle, a prominent Newfoundland businessman, played a key role in its distribution and promotion. Doyle, born in 1892, started his career in the pharmaceutical industry and later incorporated his business as Gerald S. Doyle Limited in 1929.[2] His company manufactured and bottled cod liver oil, distributing it throughout the province and the Caribbean.[2] Doyle used his own boats, the "Miss Newfoundland" and "Miss Newfoundland II," to travel the coast and promote his products.[2] He also introduced modern merchandising methods to Newfoundland.[2]
