PRINT, John Hayward, particularly John William Hayward (18441913), was a notable Newfoundland artist and inventor known for his prints and paintings, including whaling prints. He was born in Harbour Grace on July 18, 1844, and was a self-taught artist who also worked as a bank clerk in St. John's, Newfoundland [1] [2]. His artistic contributions include landscape paintings, engraved vignettes of contemporary St. John's life, and numerous signal flag charts, often in watercolor or as lithographed broadsheets. These flag charts, often referred to as "Hayward's Flags," are significant for their decorative Victorian exuberance and provide insights into the commercial and social life of St. John's during his time
