BARREL, Reginald Cole, Bonavista, 709-363-7975: Newfoundland has a long history of fishing and trade, which necessitated the use of barrels for preserving and transporting products. The design and construction of these barrels were influenced by European methods, particularly those brought by early settlers from England and Ireland. As such, many antique Newfoundland barrels exhibit characteristics typical of 18th and 19th-century barrel-making practices.
